Kickball Comedy Night

The comedy event of the season is finally here. The Cambridge Kickball League has organized an evening of laughs more unbeatable than the Ballin' Senators.

On Friday, July 11th Improv Asylum has agreed to host WAKA at the 8pm show. If you've been to Improv Asylum before, you know this is an event not to be missed. If you haven't been, come with your friends and check it out.

This event will raise money for Horizons for Homeless children and will help us exceed our season goal! Tickets are regular price ($20) with half of the proceeds going to our charity.

We will be selling tickets at the bar this Sunday. Alternatively, you can order them on your own by calling Improv Asylum (1 617 263-NUTS(6887)) or going to the their Box Office. When ordering tickets you MUST MENTION WAKA or we will not receive the credit towards the charity. Tickets must also be bought over the phone or at the box office (DON'T ORDER ONLINE!).

The Box office is located at 216 Hanover Street in the North End. Their hours are:
Sunday-Monday: CLOSED
Tuesday: 3PM-5PM
Wednesday-Thursday: 1PM-9PM
Friday-Saturday: 12Noon - 11:30PM

Arrive by 7:30, have a drink or two and socialize with fellow kickballers at the table that will be setup in the front of the lobby. Try not to arrive late, you'll pay the price in certain humiliation.

Non-kickballers are also invited and encouraged to attend.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Week 4 Scores and Recaps

Playground Bullies: 2
Ballin Senators: 7

Recap from the Senators:

Johnson's fight against Jeffries, 1910.

Sunday’s match between the Ballin’ Senators and the Playground Bullies was reminiscent of the fight of the century between the great boxer Jack Johnson, the “Galveston Giant,” and James J. Jeffries. Arguably the best heavyweight of his generation, Johnson overpowered his opponents with a more patient approach than was customary in that day. The Ballin’ Sens, after having studied the techniques of Johnson, chose to begin the game cautiously, starting out with a 1-0 lead in the first with some great base running by Rob. Slowly building up over the rounds into a more aggressive team, the Ballin’ Sens finally exploded, scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the fourth, punishing the Playground Bullies rather than simply knocking them out. Maggie Mirch also added a one-two punch with her first score of the season! Following in the footsteps of their great teacher, Johnson, the Sens endlessly avoided the Bullies’ blows and struck with swift counters. The Bullies capitalized on a moment of weakness in the top of the fifth, but the effective defensive style of the Sens was no match for the weak punches the Bullies mustered. Just like Jack Johnson, the Ballin’ Sens are described by the press as devious fighters. K.O. after four and a half rounds: Sens 7, Bullies 2.

Heavyweight Championship Belts go to:
Bill: for countless blows from the pitching mound. Jab, jab, hook. Can’t deal with that.
Lauren: for keeping the team alive in the fourth, driving home a runner and shocking the Bullies by floating like a butterfly and stinging like a bee. My, she’s pretty but she deals hard blows.

Kick in a Box: 11
Flight of the Kickballs: 2

Recap from Kick in a Box
There was no take-off this week as Kick in a Box kept the Flight of the Kickballs grounded. A solid defensive game played by Kick in a Boxers helped give a big boost to their offensive attack. With 1 run in the weeks 2 and 3 combined...KIAB raced to 11-2 score after 5 innings; which by rule means they win.
The KIAB attack was led by Drew "I like to wear long sleeves in 117 degree weather" Murray and Heather "When I pee it" Byrnes, who each kicked two-run homers.
Game MVP went to "When I pee it" as she picked the pocket of a FOTK kicker with the quickest foul ball catcher catch ever seen in WAKA history.
Bar MVP Honors go out to Keith "Like an Oak Tree" OConnor, Brian "My Armpits Smell Like the Charles" Caldwell, and Kristen "Drew doesn't know my last name"... They didn't go to the game, but still showed at the bar with their uniforms on. Plus, Keith brought his family to play flip cup. So cute.

-------------------

Kickhopopotamus: 22
Max Power: 3

Recap from Kickhopopotamus:
In the battle of the best... named teams, Kickhopopotamus showed absolute dominance. The game started off very close, knotted at a 0-0 tie, until Kickhop lead-off hitter, Samantha, came around to score in the first. Kickhop's strategy took advantage of the high humidity, relying on the long ball to bring in the runs. Home runs from Brando (1), Nick (1), and two more from league leader Simon (4) put the game out of reach. But the real key to victory was again lock-down defense from all potami on the lineup, turning down the power from MAX to a much more manageable 3 watts.

Recap from Max Power:
A VERY VERY close game this Sunday. Max Power came out very strong and Kickhopopotamus seemed like they were having a very OFF day. Max Power was down 1 player. Cap'n Phil on the DL with a bad back (rumors of a vicious incident involving giant albino squirrels). Bethany and Madeleine stepped up to plate (well, not literally it was the pitcher's mound... grass). Even though Kickhopopotamus led the game in scoring Max Power did an excellent job offensively with many runners reaching base. Offensive props go to Rob and Elyssa both with doubles. Adam making some
great defensive plays along with both of the Brand sisters Elyssa and Rebecca. Props to the enemy (Kickhopopotamus) go to - Simon and Nick for some great pitching

Max Power would like to disprove the following statement: Cuz we're the Kickhopopotamus our runs are bottomless. That statement is obviously untrue as you can see we held them down to only a mere 22 runs.

Oh yeah and there were pictures taken. See below.

Charity Fundraising Update

When the board set an ambitious goal to raise $1,000 for Horizons for Homeless Children this season, many said it could not be done. However, thanks to the efforts of our board and the graciousness of everyone in the Cambridge Kickball league, we have already exceeded our goal.

This tremendous effort is highlighted by the Mid-Season Kickball party which, alone, brought in over $800. As of last Sunday the league had raised just over $1,000. To our knowledge this is more than any Massachusetts WAKA league has ever raised. Thank you everyone for such a wonderful effort thus far.

Where do we go from here? I believe we must strive for new heights. Throughout history our leaders have set ambitious goals. From John F Kennedy to Ronald Reagan to John McCain.

Our league is setting a new, equally ambitious goal: to raise as much money as possible throughout the remainder of the season. Could we double our original goal? Triple it? No one knows for sure, but every team will get to guess.

Each team in the Cambridge League should submit a guess as to how much money they believe will be raised throughout the season. The team closest to the actual dollar amount WITHOUT GOING OVER the actual dollar amount will win a prize that is currently TBD, however, certain to please any team...if the price is right. Remember, the league has currently raised just over $1,000. This is the last fundraising update that will be made until the final total is revealed at the end of the season. Please submit all bids to league President Simon Holroyd, or Charity Chair Matthew Hutchens, in writing at Tommy Doyle's on Sunday. And remember to continue to check the blog for more fund raising events...

Again, thank you all for a tremendous effort thus far this season. Let's be sure to finish just as strong as we started.

Week 2 Recaps

Playground Bullies: 5
Kick in a Box: 1

recap from the bullies:
we won?!? that's new!!

recap from Kick in a box
There was very little kick in all boxes this fateful Sunday, as KIAB was munted around by a bunch bullies in white t-shirts. In a game that lacked any real Sportscenter highlights, The Playgrounders grinded out a victory with a bunch of ground balls, dinks, dunks, and munts. Also included in the game were two gentlemen proud of their munting skills, none of which were wearing dark blue. KIAB took a 5-1 loss out on the field, but had one heck of a showing flipping out at the bar.
Co-Game MVP honors go out to Owen "It's Tindle not Tingle" Tindle and Meg "Bumble Bee" Schneider for starting their kickball careers with only one at foot each. Sorry for not getting you up more often (that's what she said).
Bar MVP Honors go out to Heather "When I pee it" Byrnes. She sucked real bad at flipping cups and took herself out of the line-up several times to regain her quasi-good composure. She composed enough to chug a car bomb. Well done.

-----------------------

Max Power: 3
Kickin Yer Balls: 1

recap from Max:
After the crushing defeat by the Ballin' Senators * (see note below), Max Power needed repair. So, we went to the same people the Million Dollar Man went to and got fixed up REAL nice. Kick Yer Balls thought they could hit us with some low blows but not with the new synthetic materials... in the brand new WAKA KICKBALLS. It was a great battle but the Green Monsters could not defeat Max Power. Everyone played excellent defense coupled with some great offense. Of note were POWERful singles by Jake, Abel, Sarah (2 of them), Adam, Michelle, and Pete. Seth doubled in the 3rd inning nearly breaking the sound barrier and then getting sent home with a home run by Captain Phil that was NOT called a dead ball EVEN though it bounced off of a Cirrus Cloud into fair play. Adam scored off of Pete's single in the 4th running so fast that he caught a gazelle on his way home (and then ate it once home). Kick Yer Balls playing great kickball but unable to stop the POWER.
I would like to welcome Tully who was drafted from Overseas from Kick Yer Balls whom I had the honor of pitching her the first official American kickball pitch. Welcome to Alcoholism Tully, I mean Kickball.

Once again I have attached an actual picture from the game somewhere below.

* It appears that even attaining super speed and super strength the Ballin' Senators were not given the ability to ref very well (Ohh, speaking of low blows. Sorry girls I had to. I still love ya though)

Cap'n Phil

----------------------

Ballin Senators: 10
Flight of the Kickballs: 0

recap from F.o.t.K:
Flight of the Kickballs was narrowly defeated by the Ballin' Senators last Sunday in Cambridge. Perhaps defeated is not the right word, as no one felt that way. Spirits ran high, and the entire team agreed it would have won if it had had just a few more innings. Although the Senators staked themselves to a 3-0 lead, Kickballs' catcher Emily K booted 2 runners home in the bottom of the 4th to close the gap to 3-2. Unfortunately, this was the extent of the offense on Sunday, but this ragtag bunch of players, drinkers, and most importantly, dreamers, are itching to get back on the field and absolutely demolish their next opponent.

recap from the Seantors:
Just as Sir Edmund Hillary valiantly battled against the seemingly insurmountable odds, braving the cruel elements as he scaled and conquered Mount Everest, so too did the Ballin’ Sens weather the storm and emerge victorious in their game against Kickin Yer Balls. The snow-capped peaks of Mount Everest proved a formidable opponent to Hillary and his loyal Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, yet he was still able to prevail, relying on brute force, cunning skill, and an iron will to succeed. While Kickin Yer Balls was a worthy adversary, in the end it was no match for the onslaught of homeruns, amazing defense, and Sherpa-like base running of the Ballin’ Sens who dominated 10-0. Their foe was buried in an avalanche of unstoppable pitches and uncatchable boots.

Tenzing Norgay Awards: for those Ballin’ Sens without whom the victory would have been impossible.

Max, Bill, Hydro for their endurance on the pitching mound. Sara M for lightning-fast running. Garrett and Melinda for losing their kickball virginity. Katey for unshakable nerves in the outfield.

----------------------

Kickhopopotamus: 14
Surrender Your Booty: 6

recap from Kickhop:
Chalk up another victory for law and order over pilferage and skullduggery. Kickhopopotamus came out with a dominating display of offense. Big hits by Nick, Annemarie and Samantha, and some superb baserunning by Lauren B scored us 14 unmatchable runs. Despite some intense debate over the legality of certain pitching rules, cooler heads eventually prevailed. It is also important to note that JMO and Simon are still very much in love.

No recap from SYB

Week 1 Recaps

Max Power: 1
Ballin Senators: 7

recap from Max:

The pretty potently powerful purple team Max Power, came out strong this Sunday with an amazing turnout of 22 people. Max Power is a conglomeration of former teams - Serial Kickers, Slidin' Dirty, The Tools and many new fresh faces. After a grueling workout regimen (throwing around a 24 inch Chuck E Cheese ball) Max Power was ready for action. Unfortunately Max Power was not even ready for what was to come. With the onset of Genetic manipulation and HGH, scientists have created what is referred to as the Ballin' Senators. As strong as Max Power played they could not stop there brutality. Many were lost in the battle which will force Max Power to play with a smaller lineup this next Sunday. Flight of the Kickballs - BEWARE! Ballin' Senators are not to be taken lightly.
*PLEASE NOTE*
I have attached actual Before and After pictures documenting the battle. WARNING!! These are NOT for the faint of heart!

no recap from the Senators...

------------------------

Kicking Yer Balls: 4
Flight of the Kickballs: 3

No recap from either team.

-----------------------

Kickhopopotamus: 6
Playground Bullies: 4

recap from the Bullies: we lost. typical.

recap from kickhopopotamus: the MVP of this game was oddly awarded 5 hours prior to the start of the game. Team enabler, Mike Coughlin hosted the kickhop-kickoff brunch starting at 10am Sunday morning. Coughlin's spread included no fewer than 6 growlers, 8 cases, 2 30-racks, and a bottle of chambord. There was some delicious food as well, i think. In game props go to self-declared "rookie of the year candidate", matt hutchens, who drove in 2 big runs batting in the clean up spot for his first time ever.

-----------------

Kick in a Box: 9
Surrender Your Booty: 6

Kick in a Box recap:
The game started with a munt. The game continued as Surrender Your Booty raced to a 6-1 lead after 3 innings. Then Kick in a Box decided to take the kicks out of the box and use them. Helped by 4 home runs by Brian "I'm a Virginian" Caldwell, Nick "I suck 'em down like nothin'" Garcia-Tunon, Chris "Preakness" Ciocca, and Drew "I'll let Nick drink it" Murray, KIAB raced to 9-6 intense Opening Day Victory.
Game MVP Honors goes to Chris. Along with a home run...he pulled off the back end of a successful tip drill for a solid out. A rookie no longer.
Bar MVP Honors goes to Nick. He proved he sucks 'em down like nothin'. And I mean he sucks them down like nothin'.

no recap from SYB.

Charity Update

A special thanks to all kickballers who made the brave decision to give up their change and forgo clean clothes this week, and instead decided to contribute towards our charitable goal of $1,000.

Last Sunday in the Charity Jar that was passed around at Tommy Doyle's the league collected, with very little cajoling, $156. (Approximately $60 in cash and $96 in loose change.) In addition to this we collected 5.70 Euros (8.85USD) and 5 Kronur (.06USD). (Current exchange rates can be found at www.xe.com) As promised this contribution will be reflected on the league's Charity Thermometer, to be revealed Friday, that will chart our progress throughout the season.

Also on Friday at Jose McIntyre's there will be a 50/50 raffle. Raffle tickets are $1 each. If you buy $10 you also receive a lei. Entering this raffle gives you the chance at a cash prize, and half the proceeds go to charity! Plus, who doesn't want to say that they (insert compulsory "lei" joke here).

Once again thanks to all who contributed. With your continued support I have no doubt we will reach our ambitious goal!

Ivy League Sets Most Ambitious Charity Goal Ever

The 2008 Ivy League Spring Season is off to a great start. Many in the league have set ambitious goals for the season. Fellow kickballers have made commitments such as: not being asked to leave a single bar all season, kicking less like a little girl, and setting a single season man-bunt record.

While these goals are indeed impressive, they pale in comparison to the enormous charity goal set by the board this season.

Each season, our kickball league raises money for a designated charity. This year we are playing for Horizons for Homeless Children. Horizons is a Boston based-charity that runs playspaces for children throughout Massachusetts. These playspaces teach children to share, to read and to enjoy exploring their worlds. Additionally, these spaces allow parents time to learn new job skills, work towards a GED or technical degree and, hopefully, to break the cycle of homelessness.

This season we have committed to raise, what we believe to be, a WAKA Massachusetts single season record of $1,000. While this number may seem daunting, kickballers can rest assured the board has numerous new and exciting fund-raising activities planned that will help us hit our target. Activities currently on the table include 50/50 raffles, charity bar points and a post season WAKA Ivy League Tournament Bracket.

For those who would like to contribute immediately there will be a Change for Charity container at Tommy Doyle’s every Sunday. Have a spare dime, quarter, dollar? Throw it in. It’s going towards a great cause and we’ll need all the help we can get to reach our goal.

Check back to receive goal updates as well as planned weekly fundraising activities.

Thanks for your help in making this one of the most fun and rewarding kickball seasons to date!
